PharmaCare Analysis Essay - 3093 Words
Three ethical issues relating to marketing and advertising are Truth in Adverting and Marketing, Advertising and Marketing Harmful Products and Advertising and Marketing Tactics. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has requirements for truth in advertising and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) enforces the provisions of this act. Marketing and advertising is an effective way to introduce products or services and to increase sales. However it could also be a tool companyââ¬â¢s use unethically. Any information that is likely to mislead consumers into purchasing or using products and services that is deceptive or unfair comes under the radar of the FTC. An example of this, weight loss products, actions have been taken against hundreds ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Many countries view differently the advertising of harmful products placing personal responsibility on consumers and regulating what consumers are allowed to indulge in. The US highly regulates some forms of harmful products, allow others, and still give some a pass. An example of this, cigarette advertising, it is only allowed on certain media, excluding television and radio, while alcohol is permitted on all media. Young or uninformed consumers usually fall victim to this type of a dvertising and marketing. The third issue is, Marketing and Advertising Tactics. Companies use all sorts of method to attract consumer from subliminal advertising, to emotional appeals taking advantage of less educated individuals. In 2012 two leading paint companies, Sherwin-Williams Company and PPG Architectural Finishes, Inc., agreed to settle with the FTC regarding charges that they did mislead consumers into believing that some of their paint was free of volatile organic compounds, in other words, harmful chemicals. When a company markets or advertises a product and states that it is free of an ingredient that might be an environmental or health hazard it must not contain or very little (meaning trace), of the ingredient. Another ethical issue example in marketing and advertising tactics, huge drug companies try to influence medical professionals to prescribe their drugs by hosting lavish events and showering doctors with gifts and benefits. Oedipus The King, And Oedipus At Colonus - 1065 Words
Along with Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone is one of Sophoclesââ¬â¢ three Theban tragic plays estimated to have been written ââ¬â or at least performed for the first time - in 442 BCE. At the start of the play it is communicated that Antigone, along with her sister Ismene, are the sole surviving children of Oedipus. Their brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles, have recently been killed in a battle in which they fought on opposing sides. Polyneices led a mercenary force to conquer Thebes, while Eteocles remained loyal to the state. Emerging from the ashes of this failed conquest Antigone and King Creon are at an impasse. Creon orders that Eteocles be given full funeral rites while forbidding the same for Polyneices, who was a traitor. Antigone, on the other hand, believes that it is her family duty to bury her brother Polyneices and perform full funeral rites for him regardless of Creonââ¬â¢s edict that anyone who does so will forfeit their lives. Antigone bel ieves it is pious and good to honor her family and the laws of the gods, whereas Creon believes it is of utmost importance to honor the state and the laws proclaimed by the ruler. This essay will show that Antigone and Creon have very different views on what is good and pious, and that they completely reject the views of the other which results in their mutual destruction. Creon proclaims an edict that Polyneices, as a traitor, is not to be given funeral rites nor buried, but whose body is left to be, ââ¬Å"chewed up byShow MoreRelatedOedipus The King And Oedipus At Colonus1567 Words à |à 7 Pagesworks of Sophocles and particularly evident in Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus, not only exalts the Greek nationalism present at the date of composition but dictates the course of the story, evolving as its tragic hero works through his fated anguish. Why Americans Should Learn a Foreign Language Argumentative Essay free essay sample
Steve Fidel once has written, ââ¬Å"A person who speaks three languages is trilingual; a person who speaks two languages is bilingual; a person who speaks one language is ââ¬â American. â⬠In spite of the fact, that English language one of widely widespread in the world, it should not use that as an excuse for native born residents of the United States to avoid studying another language. Alcohol abuse among the elderly Essay Example For Students
Alcohol abuse among the elderly Essay Alcohol abuse among the elderly Essay Population Alcohol abuse among the elderly is a widespread problem through the United States. It is hard to discover by physicians and medical providers, because many of these people have been abusing alcohol secretly for years. The population is extremely unlikely to admit that they have problems with alcohol, especially during a routine health care visit. As many as 15% of the population over 65 may be heavy drinkers, although this number is hard to pin down. Elderly people usually drink due to depression, loneliness and lack of social support. Most alcohol abuse comes from a lifetime history; whereas others develop alcoholic drinking patterns later in life. Alcoholism accounts for more than 15% of health care costs in the elderly. It is associated with an estimated 100,000 deaths per year in the United States. Alcohol consumption can produce both benefits and risks. In terms of benefits, men who drink two to six alcoholic beverages per week have decreased mortality rates and lower cardiovascular disease when compared with abstainers. On the negative side, two studies of 300,000 men demonstrated increased mortality among those consuming more than 2 to 3 drinks daily. Women, are more affected by less alcohol than men, perhaps because they have a lower blood volume, and so its distribution and decreased activity for gastric alcohol dehydrogenase are increased. The primary care physician plays an important role in making the diagnosis and in helping the older alcoholic receive proper medical and psychological care. As patients grow older, and develop conditions that require prescription and over the counter medications, opportunities for dangerous alcohol/drug interactions increase. Elderly patients should be encouraged to monitor their alcohol intake so that it does not conflict with their medications. When a problem is identified, begin by counseling patients and the family. Increased social support may be all that is needed to stop excessive alcohol consumption by some older patients. Reference Butler, Robert (June, 1998) Alcoholism and the later years. Benefits of Solar-Powered Water Heaters
Benefits of Solar-Powered Water Heaters Dear EarthTalk: I heard that using a solar powered water heater in my home would reduce my CO2 emissions significantly. Is this true? And what are the costs? Anthony Gerst, Wapello, IA Conventional Water Heaters Use Energy According to mechanical engineers at the University of Wisconsinââ¬â¢s Solar Energy Laboratory, an average four-person household with an electric water heater needs about 6,400 kilowatt hours of electricity per year to heat their water. Assuming the electricity is generated by a typical power plant with an efficiency of around 30 percent, it means that the average electric water heater is responsible for about eight tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, which is almost double that emitted by a typical modern automobile. The same family of four using either a natural gas or oil-fired water heater will contribute about two tons of CO2à emissions annually in heating their water. And as we know, carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. Conventional Water Heaters Pollute Surprising as it may seem, analysts believe that the annual total CO2 produced by residential water heaters throughout North America is roughly equal to that produced by all of the cars and light trucks driving around the continent. Another way of looking at it is: If half of all households used solar water heaters, the reduction in CO2à emissions would be the same as doubling the fuel-efficiency of all cars. Solar Water Heaters Gaining Popularity Having half of all households use solar water heaters might not be such a tall order. According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), there are 1.5 million solar water heaters already in use in U.S. homes and businesses. Solar water heater systems can work in any climate and EESI estimates that 40 percent of all U.S. homes have sufficient access to sunlight such that 29 million additional solar water heaters could be installed right now. Solar Water Heaters: The Economical Choice Another great reason to switch to a solar water heater is financial. According to the EESI, residential solar water heater systems cost between $1,500 and $3,500, compared to $150 to $450 for electric and gas heaters. With savings in electricity or natural gas, solar water heaters pay for themselves within four to eight years. And solar water heaters last between 15 and 40 yearsthe same as conventional systemsso after that initial payback period is up, zero energy cost essentially means having free hot water for years to come. Whatââ¬â¢s more, in the U.S. federal government offers homeowners tax credits of up to 30 percent of the cost of installing a solar water heater. The credit is not available for swimming pool or hot tub heaters, and the system must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation. What to Know Before You Install a Solar Water Heater According to the U.S. Department of Energyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Consumerââ¬â¢s Guide to Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency,â⬠zoning and building codes relating to the installation of solar water heaters usually reside at the local level, so consumers should be sure to research the standards for their own communities and hire a certified installer familiar with local requirements. Homeowners beware: Most municipalities require a building permit for the installation of a solar hot water heater onto an existing house. For Canadians looking to get into solar water heating, the Canadian Solar Industries Association maintains a list of certified solar water heater installers, and Natural Resources Canada makes its informative booklet, ââ¬Å"Solar Water Heating Systems: A Buyerââ¬â¢s Guide,â⬠available as a free download on their website.
